Serena Williams Explains How She Teaches Her Daughter to Love Herself and Shares Compliments

Serena Williams is ensuring that her two children embrace self-love and also demonstrate appreciation for others.

"For me, it's important that they genuinely love and accept themselves and others," Williams, 42, told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published on Thursday, April 4.

The four-time Olympic gold medalist and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, have two daughters, Olympia, 6, and Adira, who is 7 months old.

Williams teaches her children to promote positivity among their peers.

"I also promote positivity by encouraging them to give compliments, especially to other girls. So if I notice a girl in their class, I'll say, 'Isn't she pretty?' And they'll respond, 'Yeah, I like her hair.' And I'll say, 'I like her hair too.' So I'm just fostering that, because it doesn't matter what someone looks like. If you can find something positive about them, then you'll also find something positive about yourself, and then you'll both benefit."

In a separate interview on Thursday, Williams spoke to Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on "Today with Hoda & Jenna" about welcoming her daughter Adira.

"The new baby is amazing. I have to say I'm obsessed with her. Oh my gosh, she's so sweet. She's the best, I love her," Williams shared, adding that Olympia had wanted a sister.

"So I was thrilled when we had the opportunity to have another little girl," she continued. "I have four sisters, I'm one of five. So I'm used to having sisters."
