Serena Williams won the Australian Open in 2017 while she was pregnant. Her daughter, Olympia, now four years old (she turns five on Thursday), was present at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night to watch her mother compete.
She even nearly stole the show on ESPN.
As Williams served and volleyed, the things that have defined her game and legacy, Olympia sat nearby in Williams' player's box. She wore her hair in ponytails with white beads, reminiscent of the style her mother wore when she won her first US Open title in 1999. Olympia also sported a black button-down shirt with matching print to the one her mother wore on court.
"It's because of her wearing them, or me," Williams said in a press conference following her win.
"I wanted to do it, but I don't have time," she said, before mentioning that Olympia had requested to wear a string of beads, many of them.
"I was so happy she wore them, it was perfect for her," she said.
Olympia - full name Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. - watched Williams play, but also spent time alternating between playing with Isha Price's hair and sitting in her father's lap, clapping. Price is one of Williams' sisters.
"I look forward to being a mom," Williams said at a post-match ceremony. "She's a good girl and I just want to be a good mom to her."
Williams began her farewell essay in Vogue magazine with an anecdote about Olympia and how she felt she had to choose between tennis and family:
"Don't get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I love every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I'm one of those women who love being pregnant and was working until the day I had to be hospitalized - although everything became extremely complicated on the other side. And I practically did the impossible: Many people didn't realize I was pregnant two months when I won the Australian Open in 2017. But I turned 41 this month, and something has to give."
After the match, Olympia and her father went to the player's lounge to get ice cream.
