This 10-year-old pup, with spinal birth defects that have left her somewhat hunchbacked, emerged as the winner of this year's competition.

The pit bull-Dutch shepherd mix, accompanied by her owner, claimed the $1,500 prize last week, surpassing 25 other dogs vying for the title in a contest that celebrates imperfections, according to organizers.

Quasi Modo's journey began when she was abandoned at an animal shelter before finding a home with a veterinarian in Loxahatchee, Fla., as detailed in her biography on the contest's website.

"While my appearance might startle some (I've had grown men leap onto their cars in fear, mistaking me for a hyena or Tasmanian devil), once they get to know me, my bubbly personality wins them over," her biography stated.

The second and third prizes went to two Chinese crested and Chihuahua mixes named Sweepee Rambo and Frodo, respectively.

An 8-year-old Chihuahua named Precious received the "spirit award," which honors dogs and owners who have overcome challenges or are serving their community. Precious, blind in one eye, is trained to detect scents related to low blood sugar levels and alert her disabled veteran owner, according to her biography.

The competition, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, is now in its 27th year. A three-judge panel evaluates the dogs based on various criteria, including special or unique characteristics, personality, and natural "ugliness."
