Elder Sister convinces Serena Williams to Return to Competition

Venus Williams wants to team up with Serena on the WTA Tour in the doubles event, but her younger sister has not yet agreed.

Serena officially retired on September 2, after being eliminated in the third round of the US Open women's singles. She and her sister Venus had previously lost in the opening round of the women's doubles. Serena ended her 26-year career with 23 Grand Slam singles titles among her 73 championships.

In addition to their illustrious singles careers, the Williams sisters are one of the most successful female doubles pairs in history. They have won 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. At 42, Venus believes that she and her sister can still play together in the coming years as the doubles event doesn't require as much physical exertion.

"We actually played well despite being eliminated early at the US Open," Venus said about their recent doubles match with her sister on her YouTube channel. "We ran out of steam a bit, sometimes taking 10 minutes to hold service. But I couldn't be happier because it's the first time in six years that we've teamed up."

Venus revealed that Serena truly wants to move away from tennis to develop herself in other areas. However, the elder Williams sister still hopes her sister will accept the invitation to return to doubles.

After leaving the US Open, Serena posted a photo of herself sleeping on Sunday, September 4, her first day off from tennis. However, the soon-to-be 41-year-old tennis player has not completely closed the door on her beloved sport. She said, "You never know what the future holds. Maybe I'll come back to play tennis someday."

This year's US Open was the first Grand Slam since 2003 to lack Serena, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer in the singles quarterfinals. In 2020, the "Big 3" were absent from the men's singles quarterfinals, but Serena reached the women's singles semifinals.
